Delicious works of art and new Basque cuisine from Juan Mari and Elena Arzak in the Arzak restaurant in Donostia

Donostia, Euskal Herria (Gastrosofie). For some it is the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country, for others it is occupied by „Spaniards“ or Castilians and is called Euskal Herria or just Euskadi. There are many villages and towns in Euskal Herria. Donostia is a city, a big city of have, also called San Sebastián by the occupiers. There, New Basque Cuisine is served in a restaurant called Arzak.

For this, the owner and chef Juan Mari Arzak received the Universal Basque Award for adapting gastronomy, one of the most important traditions of the Basque Country, to the new times and making it one of the most innovative in the world. If you want to check this, you are very welcome in the Arzak restaurant, which has been open again since May 27, 2021.

The house was built in the village of Alza in 1897 by the grandparents of the current owner, José Maria Arzak Etxabe and Escolastica Lete. Today Alza belongs to Donostia and the house has long been a wine and tavern. In the kitchen, Juan Mari Arzak and his daughter Elena Arzak share the work and the two are not alone. Incidentally, there were three Michelin stars as early as 1989.
