Burkheim, Germany (Gastrosofie). Burkheim is worth a visit and so are the Burkheim winemakers. They present themselves neatly on their home page Burkheimer Winzer, certainly solid, but not really nimble and smart. Even the current price list of 16 March 2023 is factual, as if made for professional purchases, sober and clear for connoisseurs and critics, but not snappy for the (common) people and not in line with the latest trends. Certainly, no one has to go all advertising hooker and trendy whore, but even a good bottle should be beautifully adorned and not just a less than charming bride. What applies to anglers should also apply to winegrowers: the worm must please the fish.
After all, the worm is not in the wooden barrel of Burkheimer Winzer am Kaiserstuhl eG. Everyone can convince themselves of this on site in the vinotheque. Taste not only Müller-Thurgau, Rivaner, Silvaner as well as Weißer Burgunder, Scheurebe, Ruländer and Riesling, Muskateller and Grauer Burgunder, but also Gewürztraminier, Chardonney, Spätburgunder, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo.
Great growths
The Vini Grande, dry wines matured in barriques, are considered Große Gewächse by the people of Burkheim. These quality wines are indeed „vinified for substance and ripeness“ and „show an exact balance“ (rejoice who knows it). The 2020 Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir are from the Feuerberg, the 2023 Gewürztraminer, 2022 Chardonnay, 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2021 Tempranillo are from the Schloßgarten. The price for a 0.75-litre bottle is 15.90 euros each.
In the Schloßgarten, the soil consists of loess and clay, on the Feuerberg of volcanic rock. The latter is good for Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris.
The Burgundy
This Rioja variety also comes as a surprise to others who comment, but „the pound with which they can grow remains the Burgundies“, it also says in „Falstaff“ and continues: „The white Burgundy varieties flank their respective varietal type with minerality, the reds have fruit and ripe tannin. When we saw the dry Spätburgunder Beerenauslese, we were sceptical at first, but lo and behold: with its concentration, this wine parries the alcohol, which is inevitably high when you ferment sultanas into a dry wine.“
The Grauburguner is and remains the most important white wine grape variety in the Kaiserstuhl. The particular one and the wines in general are perfectly suited to the soil conditions. Generally speaking, the Burkheim wines are of powerful structure.
The Rucksack and the Burgemer Wii-Weg
Get yourself poured in the Vinothek and have a Burkheim wine rucksack filled with chilled wines. Then walk along the beautiful Burkheim Wine Trail, newly designed in 2020 and called the Burgeme Wii Trail by connoisseurs, which is a four-and-a-half-kilometre circular path. It offers insights and views as well as wine.
